Instrumental Music Program of Excellence

The Instrumental Music Program of Excellence at Banksia Beach State School provides a structured and dynamic pathway for students to develop their musical abilities while fostering teamwork, creativity, and discipline.

Program Structure

Our program follows a tiered band system, ensuring students are supported as they progress:

  • Foundation Concert Band: Our entry level ensemble, focused on mastering the fundamentals of playing in an ensemble.
  • Junior Concert Band: For students building confidence and developing technique.
  • Intermediate Concert Band: For those advancing to more complex repertoire and refining their performance skills.
  • Advanced Concert Band: Our premier ensemble, performing at a high level in school, community, and competitive events.

The Big Band is an optional extension ensemble for Advanced Concert Band students interested in exploring jazz and contemporary music styles.

Curriculum and Commitment

  • Students receive two lessons per week during school hours, following the Queensland Instrumental Music Curriculum, a structured framework that guides their technical and performance development.
  • Band rehearsals occur outside of school hours, offering students the opportunity to refine their ensemble skills and prepare for performances.

Performance and Recognition

Our bands regularly perform at school events, community functions, and competitions, where they have consistently achieved outstanding results. These performance opportunities allow students to showcase their growth and talent while building confidence and resilience.

Why Join?

The Instrumental Music Program is more than just learning an instrument—it provides students with  a sense of community, achievement, and lifelong skills. From mastering an instrument to performing as part of an award-winning ensemble, students create lasting memories while building a strong foundation for future success.

For more details, including application information and program expectations, please refer to our Instrumental Music Handbook [link to handbook].

How to Join

In Term 3, Year 2 students will receive an Expression of Interest form to apply for the Instrumental Music Program. If the form is returned, students will undergo a screening process to assess their suitability, after which they may be offered a place in the program. Places are offered on instruments from the woodwind, brass, and percussion families, allowing students to explore their interests and talents.
