PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Dear Parents,

The children in Year 3/5/7 are participating in NAPLAN tests this week.  I was so impressed as I went from class to class to see the high level focus all children demonstrated.  We should be very proud of our improvement in NAPLAN over time.  We were the 18th most improved school in Queensland over 2008 – 2011.  Congratulations to all staff and students.

Reading Challenge

Congratulations to all students who have made the final of the Reading Challenge.  Children chose a novel or story and were given one minute to impress the adjudicators.  They were judged on fluency, expression and diction. The finals will be held on Friday morning in the hall:

                                                                Prep – Year 3                        10.00am

                                                                Years 4 – 7                            11.45am.

Finalists will each receive a certificate and first, second and third place will receive medals.

WALK SAFETY TO SCHOOL DAY THIS FRIDAY

Friday 18th May is National Walk Safely to School Day.  As we did last year, we will have teachers leading “walking buses” of children and parents which will depart at 8.00am from three locations that have easy and ample parking.

The purpose is to highlight park and walking as a great option to parking in the front carpark.  Miss Stewart will “drive” the walking bus from Cosmos Park in Sunderland Drive, Mr Neisler will “drive” the walking bus from Avon Drive and Mr Mayes will lead the walking bus from Eagles Landing.  Maps showing routes have been included with this newsletter.

Change of Date - Support-A-Talker Tutor Training

The Support-A-Talker course has been put back 1 week and will now be held on Wednesday 30th May and Thursday 31st May.  We are seeking at least 20 people to train as tutors so that we can run a volunteer SAT program in Term 3 and 4.

Support-A-Talker is an early intervention program designed to support language delayed students in the lower school.  Upon completion of the course we ask that you consider volunteering a minimum of one hour a week to help implement this program at our school. Support-A-Talker training is also useful for anyone wishing to learn strategies to help their children at home.

Fantastic Bookfair

As usual, you have outdone yourselves. Our Bookfair was a huge success. You purchased $7371 worth of books and trinkets. This beats our previous best by $31. Special mention and thanks go to our wonderful Resource Centre Aide, Mrs Chris Cazalet and her team of parents and teachers who volunteered and helped out throughout our Bookfair. Thanks to all.

We will hold our second and final Bookfair for 2012 in term four.

Kind regards,

Peter Hartshorn. A/Deputy Principal.
