Travel Choice

23/03/2016
We are excited to be continuing taking part in Moreton Bay Regional Council’s Travel Choice Schools Program. By the end of last year 48% of the school population was walking, wheeling, carpooling or catching the bus to school. Banksia Beach SS was ranked 2nd in the program out of seven schools.  This year there are twelve schools in the program and we are aiming to be the top ranking school.

Worldwide studies are showing more and more primary school aged children are being diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes (typically an adulthood chronic disease). Queensland is no exception to this rule. Type 2 Diabetes comes about due to poor diet and lack of physical activity. It is recommended that adults get 30 minutes and children 1 hour of physical activity a day to stay fit and healthy. It is easy to reach this target if you break up your time throughout the day.

Therefore, we are encouraging all our families to increase your physical activity by simply parking a little further from the school and walking the rest of the way. Did you know that it only takes 15 minutes to walk 1km at a slow pace.  With almost 50% of the school population living in the catchment area this should be easy for most families to try at least once a week.

This year we will be have a number of fun filled Travel Choice to School Day event mornings in which your family can participate. In the meantime if you can start activity travelling on your own, look on the school websites travel information page for tips.
