Principal's Report

Dear Parents,

What an amazing fortnight we have had at Banksia Beach State School.

2016 Showcase Awards for Excellence in Schools - School of the Year
This is wonderful recognition for all the hard work by so many over the last 10 years to ensure high expectations are embedded and all students achieve personal excellence.  I was asked in the interview, “Why should Banksia be school of the year, what makes you better than every other school?”  I replied that we all do the Do Bees.  Everyone at Banksia believes that when you put on a Banksia uniform you do your very best.  It doesn’t matter whether it’s achieving your goals, striving for 10/10 spellings, in state arenas or even in the Green Room at the Sydney Opera House.  We all ensure we are achieving the very best we can.  Thank you to the many parents who have sent messages, tweets or made such positive comments.

Touch Football
Another amazing achievement!  On the weekend we entered two teams in the All Schools Queensland touch Football Championships.  Our wonderful Mr MacArthur has worked with these two teams all year to present a strong entry in both the girls and boys event.  There were over 140 schools competing from as far up as Rockhampton, out to Toowoomba and south to the Gold Coast.  Both teams on the Saturday finished top of their pools and went into the Championship round of 16.  The boys were defeated by St Kevin’s but played with great sportsmanship and skill.  The girls went all the way through Top 16, Quarter finals and Semi Finals to make the Grand Final against Our Lady MT Carmel, a much bigger and faster side than our well drilled and committed girls.  It was 3 all at the final whistle, which meant we went into a drop off.  A result only came after it was 3 against 3 girls with Chloe Tunks being fed a great ball and scooting through to score.  The girls showed amazing Banksia spirit.  I was so very proud of their determination.  Congratulations to Mr Mac we are so fortunate to have you as a staff member.  Mr Mac has taken these girls since Year 4 on a Monday night and leading up to this tournament on a Sunday.  Thank you also to Mr Blackmore and Miss McIlveen who gave up Saturday to watch the teams and wonderful Miss Mac from the high school who worked hard both days coaching alongside her Dad.

We are moving into a very busy period of finalising 2016 and preparing for 2017.  I have been so very impressed with our applicants for our leadership positions.  The children will give their speeches next Monday and be interviewed next Tuesday.  We will then short list for House Captains.  I know the student leadership will be in very capable hands for 2017.

Spirit Night on Wednesday 30 November and Thursday 1 December we will be holding out Spirit of Banksia night which is a celebration of all of our achievements for 2016 and performances by our bands, choirs and dance troupe. Tickets are available from the cash window and a gold coin donation on the night would be appreciated.  It will be a wonderful night and we look forward to you joining us to celebrate.

One of the roles I play outside of Banksia Beach State School is President of the Independent Public Schools Alliance. Next week from Wednesday, I will be working in Central Office involved in the selection process for the last round of schools.  Mrs Weaver will act as Principal.

I look forward to celebrating the many great things which will occur for your child this week.

Let’s have a great week
Jacqui King
