Principal's Report - Mr Martin Leach

Mr Martin Leach

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

On May 31 Banksia Beach State School hosted the North Coast Regional Final of the prestigious ‘Fanfare’ Competition, held every two years. The North Coast Region ranges from Mt Samson and Strathpine in the south right through to Agnes Waters in the North.

Fanfare is a statewide festival of bands and orchestras highlighting the talents of our state school ensembles. The program offers instrumental ensembles invaluable performance experience and provides the community with the opportunity to celebrate the achievements of young musicians and teachers. Regional festivals in May and June will be followed by the grand final concert later in the year.

Our Intermediate and Senior Bands, after rehearsing diligently all year under the expert guidance and tuition of Miss McMurtrie, Mrs Brittingham and Performing Arts Manager, Mr O’Callaghan performed exceptionally well and were selected as the two highest performing bands on the day.

Today the school received confirmation that our Banksia Beach Concert Band, conducted by Mr O’Callaghan, has been selected to perform at the State Fanfare Final scheduled to be held over August 13 and 14.

I would like to congratulate Mr O’Callaghan and all the students for this sensational achievement.

Next week the same Concert Band will perform at the Sydney Opera House in the International Music Festival. I’m very much looking forward to seeing Banksia Beach State School students performing at this World Class, iconic Australian venue.

This exciting trip, including sixty four students and eleven staff members, has been made possible thanks to the extremely generous community support provided over the last few months. I would like to thank our parent body, fabulously led and managed by Mrs Shaye Lawrence with the support of our hardworking P&C, led by Melissa Robertson, for their tireless fundraising efforts.   I would like to sincerely thank each and every person that has contributed in any way to get our students to Sydney; this trip will provide memories to last a lifetime.

Farewell Mr Jones

Aaron Jones has been Deputy Principal here since second semester last year leading the students and staff in Years Four, Five and Six.

I would like to congratulate Mr Jones on his appointment as a Band 6 Principal at a school just outside of Toowoomba.  Goombungee State School has an enrolment of about 120 students and provides Mr Jones an opportunity to continue his leadership career in a location close to a major town centre.

Mr Jones is a capable, hardworking school leader and he has made a significant contribution to Banksia Beach State School. I wish him every success in the future and thank him most sincerely for his work in our school community.

Parent Teacher Interviews

Formal parent teacher interviews will be offered in week two of semester two at Banksia Beach State School.  I have previously discussed the importance of strong partnerships between teachers and parents for the best possible student outcomes and explained that regular communication between parents and teachers is vital.

A separate note will be sent home to parents providing information about booking in a time with the teachers. I would strongly encourage parents that have not yet had a parent teacher interview to do so.

Please be aware that the scheduled interview period is not the only time you can meet with your child’s teacher. You may seek to negotiate a mutually acceptable time with your child’s teacher at any time during the year.

School Disco

Many thanks to our P&C Executive and hardworking parent volunteers and staff that will provide the opportunity for our students to enjoy a night of disco dancing on Thursday June 28.

Athletics Carnivals

We had lovely weather for our long distance events and for our Senior and Junior Sports Days. I really enjoyed all the sports days as the children were extremely well behaved; participated with great pride and sportsmanship and there were some outstanding individual performances! I would like to thank Mr MacArthur for his planning and preparation behind the scenes and on the day that ensured the days flowed smoothly.

It was fantastic to have lots of parents, caregivers and family in attendance to cheer and encourage the children. Thank you most sincerely for your support.
