To coincide with Anzac Day, 15 students from Year 6 travelled with students from Bribie Island State School and Bribie Island High School, on an educational tour of the national capital, Canberra. While on this tour they participated in a variety of educational programs that focused on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy.

The students visited Parliament House, the Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House, the Australian War Memorial, the National Museum, Australian Institute of Sport, Questacon, The Royal Australian Mint and the National Zoo and Aquarium.

At Parliament House the students were given a guided tour of the Senate and the House of Representatives. They also participated in a role play activity where they were able to make decisions as members of the Government and Opposition. Afterwards at Old Parliament House which holds the Museum of Australian Democracy, the students explored our history through interactive sights and sat in the original House of Representatives. They were also able to cast their vote in a mock up election at the National Electoral Education Centre.

We would like to thank the Australian Government for their support in contributing funding of $60 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate (PACER) program towards the travel expenses incurred.

Whilst in Canberra as members of Bribie Island Community Link, the students were able to attend the Anzac Day Dawn Service and found it to be a memorable and moving experience, despite the 4:00am start, drizzle and cold temperatures! Later that morning in front of the War Memorial, they proudly marched in their blue Community Link jackets past the Governor General, members of the Government and leaders of our armed forces. We even made it on television.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank the Bribie Island RSL Sub- branch and their fundraising team, for assisting the students to make this wonderful trip. All Banksia students had an enjoyable and educational experience. Their behaviour was excellent and made me proud to be a part of Banksia Beach State School.
