Dear Parents,
Student Leader Presentation
This fortnight we will be celebrating our Student Leader Induction on Thursday, 26 February at 9.00am. At Banksia Beach State School we believe that leadership is practised not so much in words as in attitude and in actions. Developing
leadership in our young people depends on our school providing opportunities for our students to learn about ways in which they can make a difference in the world around them. School Leaders consist of Year 7 students who are able to demonstrate a high level of discipline, adherence to school rules and who are acknowledged as role models for our school. These School Leaders are led by our School Captains, Vice Captain, Performing Arts Captains and House Captains. I look forward to introducing these students to you over the coming year. Congratulations to all badge holders. I am very proud of you.

This year we will again be offering students an opportunity to acquire funding to support them in achieving high level success through “The Jamie Fairey Scholarship.” This year marks the second year of this perpetual award. Nominations are invited from either students who are aiming for Regional selection in their chosen sport or students who are achieving high level and measurable outcomes in academia or performing arts. Aspirants will be asked to complete an application outlining the following:
1. Area of excellence
2. Previous history
3. Goals for the future
4. Reasons for applying for extra funding.
Applications are to be submitted in any form to the school office by Friday, 6 March 2009.
Whooping Cough
From time to time, parents will be receiving notices regarding infectious diseases and the processes which the school is required to put in place to manage these situations. Letters will be issued via your classroom teacher to you. Please be aware that we have had a case of Whooping Cough experienced in our school recently. The affected year level has been advised.
Fire and Flood Donation Day
Our school community is very mindful of the devastation caused to many families during recent natural disasters. Banksia Beach State School Student Council requests your support to assist the people affected by the recent fire and floods which have devastated parts of Australia.
On Friday, 20 February we are allowing students to come in free dress if they bring a gold coin as a donation. Student councillors will collect the money on Friday and we will be directly depositing this money with the Red Cross appeal. We know that our help will be gratefully appreciated.
Triathlon Success
This year for the first time our school entered a team in the Bribie Island Triathlon Series. This team consisted of Mr MacArthur, Mr Hartshorn and Mr Blackmore. Our team was placed third in the team’s event behind two professional teams. This was a great effort and a very strong message to all of our community about the importance of staying healthy and fit. Congratulations also to Mrs Blackmore who also competed in the women’s event.
RSL Donation
This week on assembly we were able to formally thank the RSL through their President Mr Clode for the wonderful donations of two trombones. We are looking forward to expanding our Instrumental Program to also include a Big Band and this requires extra brass instruments. This donation allows us to reach our goal more quickly and to continue our pursuit of excellence in music.
Parent Teacher Evenings
Thank you to the many parents who attended our Parent/Teacher evenings. It was wonderful to see your support. We will very soon be advertising our Annual General Meeting for the P&C. I encourage all to come along and be involved in our school. Banksia Beach State School is a great school and we need your support.
Have a great week!
Regards
Jacqui King
Principal
